It is now 100 days into the carbon laws. The full package, including the Clean Energy Future Act and supporting legislation, put a price and limit on carbon pollution. By law, emissions are will drop by at least 12 million tonnes per year from 2015. Stronger reductions are possible after the process to be facilitated by the independent Climate Change Authority through 2013-14.
At the 100 day mark, it is too early to tell if the laws are fully serving their purpose. The early signs are promising but the unprecedented Arctic sea ice melt and extreme weather conditions worldwide are unequivocal signs of the need to achieve the laws’ full potential.
