Climate of the Nation 2010: Australians' Attitutudes Towards Climate Change and its Solutions

The Climate Institute has commissioned both quantitative and qualitative market research on the attitudes of the Australian public on climate change and climate change solutions, for the past three years. This research aims to understand and track Australians’ attitudes to climate change and policy over the past year, as well as identify and track issues, particularly among soft voters.

This report summarises research by Auspoll and includes broader market research on public opinion on climate change. The Auspoll research was undertaken as a four-phase research program, both qualitative and quantitative during the months of April to June 2010. Auspoll also conducted exit poll research on August 21 2010.

Climate change skeptics in the minority

Only a tiny band of skeptics support no action by Parliament on climate change while more than three quarters of Australians want the Liberals to back the CPRS legislation, a poll conducted for the independent Climate Institute shows.

Strong support for Libs to back CPRS

Support for action on climate change amongst Australians remained strong and 77 per cent want the Liberal Party to back the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme according to polling conducted in May 2009 for the independent Climate Institute.

Climate of the Nation Report

This is the second annual Climate of the Nation report – a comprehensive review of public attitudes on climate change and support for climate action.

The report primarily details research into the attitudes of Australians since the 2007 federal election. It demonstrates that concern has crystallised into solid support for action - but that there is growing scepticism towards the major political parties and their ability to deliver.
