John Connor, CEO of the Climate Institute, described moves towards a new brown coal-fired power station for Victoria without a commitment to capture and store its emissions as out-dated and unnecessary.“At a time when we are urgently trying to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by taking pieces of polluting infrastructure off the board, putting more on like this doesn’t make any sense,” John Connor, CEO of the Climate Institute said.
“If we are to build these sorts of power stations then they proceed only on the basis that they will be operational with the use of full carbon capture and storage. Developing and demonstrating this technology is the only way we will be able to show leadership with countries like China.
“This may appear to be interesting technological improvements, but at the end of the day the emissions will still be at black coal levels.”
“It may be better, but it’s nowhere near good enough.”
