The independent Climate Institute expressed its disappointment today at the failure of the Senate to strengthen and pass the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) and urged all parties to strengthen and pass the renewable energy bills.
"This is a tragic postponement of the evolution of Australia’s polluting, inefficient and climate exposed economy," said John Connor, The Climate Institute CEO
"Strengthening and passing the CPRS is a vital step for Australia to be competitive in the emerging global clean energy economy and co-operative in helping achieve an effective global climate agreement.
"It is vital that this sitting of Parliament is not a complete victory for dinosaurs blocking climate action to grow clean energy jobs so we urge all politicians to decouple, strengthen and pass the renewable energy legislation.
"The renewable energy legislation should be strengthened by ensuring it will at least generate 45 000 gigawatt hours of genuine renewable energy – no phantom solar credits, no coal methane and other incentives for solar hot water outside of the legislation."
