A flat tax reduction of petrol excise, or the GST on petrol, would detract from efforts to shift to cleaner, more climate friendly transport solutions and deliver wealthier households three times more than poorer households. Overseas experience highlights that such proposals may in fact make households more vulnerable to future increases in world petrol prices. In the absence of real and decisive plans for Australia’s transport future, these proposals are short sighted, reckless and irresponsible.
