The Climate Institute supports the intent of the Coalition’s policy on soil carbon, i.e. to improve the condition of Australian soils and draw carbon down out the atmosphere. We agree that restoring the health of the soil should be a national goal regardless of its role in climate change. However, our analysis suggests that, for the reasons outlined in the report, the Coalition’s policy is unlikely to achieve the level of abatement suggested and the Institute cannot include it in our Pollute-o-meter modelling exercise. Note that the Institute cannot model the Greens’ commitment to mandatory accounting for forest management for the same reason.
