The Cancun climate summit is an opportunity for the international community to reach agreement on a ‘balanced package’ of issues, which could provide the foundations for a new treaty by building upon the foundational political agreement made last year in Copenhagen. The objective will be to formally adopt decisions on the following six issues:
- Finance: financial mechanisms for reducing economic dependence on pollution and managing climate change impacts for the most vulnerable and poorest nations.
- Pollution reductions: Capturing and reviewing the targets countries have set
- Transparency: Monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) and international assessments of country actions
- REDD: Reducing emissions from the destruction of the world’s tropical forests.
- Adaptation: Reducing climate risks and adapting to the unavoidable impacts of climate change.
- Technology: Technology development cooperation between nations.
Reaching agreement on these issues will help to foster trust and goodwill amongst the parties, and will help to increase international climate policy ambition.
