In light of Australia’s international commitment to reduce pollution by between 5 and 25 per cent, The Climate Institute has attempted to quantify the level of fiscal risk assumed by the Government. The 5 indicative scenarios detailed in the Policy Brief below illustrate that the Government currently faces a multibillion dollar budget liability to meet even its minimum agreed international target. The extent of taxpayer exposure to these costs will be dependent upon the chosen pollution pricing mechanism which should ensure the responsibility remains with the economy’s high polluters.
