Australia’s land sector is our second largest source of emissions after electricity generation. In the right policy environment, however, rural communities can realise new development and income opportunities from clean energy and carbon farming—diversifying, innovating, saving resources, and better managing risk in an increasingly challenging environment. What was a potential liability becomes an opportunity. On the other hand, excluding landholders from the low-pollution economy risks shutting the door on these possibilities.
The Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) presents an opportunity for rural communities to play a substantial, positive and rewarding role in the low-carbon-pollution economy. With careful modification, the CFI could leverage substantial investment in climate-friendly practices in agriculture and land management. For the country as a whole, this means real pollution reduction without undermining clean energy development. It could also see a range of community, business and environmental benefits alongside climate change mitigation.
