The European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is the largest multi-national pollution pricing mechanism in the world. Starting in 2005, the scheme covers more than 10,000 installations in the energy and industrial sectors. Collectively this is close to 40 per cent of the EU's total carbon pollution.
